Obituary Online notes for Jean Elizabeth COVERSTONE
Jean C. Madren 84, of Elkton passed away on Saturday January 25, 2014 at her home.
Jean was born November 15, 1929 in Elkton and was the daughter of M. W. and Clarice S. Coverstone.
On May 16, 1953 she married William Robert Madren who survives.
Jean graduated from Elkton High School in 1947 with honors, and from Madison College in 1951 with honors and a B.S. degree in Science. She became a lab technician with Merck & Company until they downsized in 1954. She then returned to Post Graduate studies and received her master's degree in education from James Madison University in 1966.
Jean began her career in education at Waterman School in Harrisonburg. She joined the Rockingham County School System in 1957 as a Science Teacher at Montevideo High School and later became the guidance counselor at that school. Jean moved to Spotswood High School when it was built in 1980. She remained Guidance Director at Spotswood until she retired in 1996, after 40 years as a Teacher and Counselor.
It was discovered in 1982 that Jean had breast cancer. It was also discovered in 1992 that she had cervical cancer, and in 2006 it was found that she had bone cancer. She lived a very painful life with that condition until her death.
Jean was a member of Elkton United Methodist Women, Order of the Eastern Star Milnes Chapter #3 where she had been a member for 50 years, Delta- Kappa Gamma Society International, Virginia Education Association, National Education Association and Phi Delta Kappa International.
The family will receive friends at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton Monday evening (Today) from 6~8.
Jean was a lifetime member of Elkton United Methodist Church where her Service will be held 11am Tuesday, January 28, 2014 with the Revs. David Reynolds and Dan Bassett officiating. Burial will follow at the Elk Run Cemetery in Elkton.
In lieu of flowers it is requested that donations be made to Hahn Cancer Center at RMH or to the Elkton Rescue Squad in her name.
