Frank Simpson Madren
Frank Simpson Madren was born fourth out of six children to Paul L. Madren Sr. and Lena Simpson Madren of Elon.
He attended Altamahaw-Ossipee High School, where he met his future wife of 55 years, Jo Ann Mansfield Madren. After their marriage, they lived in Raleigh while he earned his BSEE from N.C. State University. They then moved to Cincinnati where he worked for Procter & Gamble, before leaving for Boston to earn his MBA from Harvard Business School.
Frank had a lifelong love of computer science and technology, which took them first back to North Carolina, where his daughter Carol and son Eric were born, and then to Massachusetts.
The family relocated to California in 1981 and Frank participated in several start-up companies before taking ownership of GarrettCom in the early 1990s. He loved that company and his friends there, and retired in 2010.
In retirement, he remained active on several boards and start-ups in Silicon Valley. Outside of his work, Frank had a passion for stock trading, world travel, college football, college basketball, and building sandcastles with his grandchildren at Sandbridge Beach in Virginia.
He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann Madren, of Los Gatos, CA, their daughter and their son. His daughter Carol Madren Bedin lives with her husband, Matt Bedin, and their three children, Cooper, Dayton and Bronte, in Denver. His son, Eric Madren, MD, lives with his wife, Lisa Kopec Madren, MD, and their two children, Ben and Libby, in Chesapeake, Va.
He is also survived by his brother Paul L. Madren Jr. of Mount Airy, his sister Jane Knapel of San Mateo, CA, and his sister Sara Underwood of Winston-Salem. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Nellie Keisler of Leesville, S.C. and his brother Jefferson Madren of Reidsville.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be scheduled in California in January 2016. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Autism Society of Tidewater Virginia (
