Luther Dwaine ""Doc"" McCollum Jr.

ELON - Luther Dwaine "Doc" McCollum Jr., 86, died Sunday, July 7, 2013 at his residence.
He was born in Guilford County to the late Luther Dwaine McCollum Sr. and the late Isabelle Michael McCollum and was married for 62 years to Gaynelle Sutton McCollum, who survives.
He was a
U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a radarman on a destroyer escort. Luther also worked as a brick mason and later in life, would offer his services for just a donation to his church. He also worked for the U.S. Department of Transportation as a contract administrator until his retirement in 1986, when he and his wife moved to Elon. Mr. McCollum was an active member of Fairview United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School and also served as Sunday School Superintendent for many years.
He is survived by his wife, of the home; daughter, Cynthia (Tom) McCollum-Uzzo of New York City; sons, Dwaine Thomas (Frances) McCollum of Fairfax, Va., Samuel Keith (Cynthia) McCollum of Montpelier, Va.; grandchildren, Joel David (Melanie) McCollum, Seth Michael (Ashley) McCollum; great-grandchildren, Blake Luther McCollum, Emma Jean McCollum, Brooks Matthew McCollum; and a sister-in-law, Ocho Lee McCollum of Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Homer McCollum, Herbert McCollum, Esther Tillett, Alma Dexheimer, Mabel Lethco, Harvey McCollum, Mary Dexheimer and James McCollum.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Fairview United Methodist Church by the Rev. S. Mark Clark with interment to follow in Bethlehem Christian Church cemetery at Altmahaw.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 Wednesday evening at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory.
