Mrs. Lena M. Sutton
ELON COLLEGE — Mrs. Lena Myrtle Brown Sutton, 99, of 2779 John Sutton Road,
died at 6:45 p.m. Friday, May 7, 1999, at her home after two years of failing health, three weeks critical.
A native of Guilford County, she was the wife of the late Mr. John Thomas Sutton and the daughter of Mr. John Mebane Brown and Mrs. Susan Wagoner Brown, both deceased.
She was a homemaker and attended Fairview United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the ladies class and was mother of the year in 1969. She also was a lifetime member of Apple’s Chapel Christian Church.
Survivors include six daughters, Mrs. Byron (Pauline) Gross, Mrs. Luther (Gaynelle)
McCollum, Mrs. Billy Sue Sutton Benolken and Mrs. Richard (Polly) Wilson, all of Elon College, Mrs. Marjorie “Margie” Foster of San Antonio, Texas, and Mrs. Shelvia Jean Russell of Graham; two sons, Mr. John Harold Sutton and Mr. John Daniel Sutton of Elon College; a sister, Mrs. Ollie Chrismon of Reidsville; 21 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ms. Velma Elizabeth Sutton; a son, Mr. Thomas Sutton; three sisters, Mrs. Bertha Lowe, Miss Callie Brown and Miss Effie Brown; and five brothers, Mr. Stiner Brown, Mr. Edgar Brown, Mr. Rankin Brown, Mr. Roy Brown and Mr. Russell Brown.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Apple’s Chapel Christian Church by the Rev. John Dutton of Fairview United Methodist Church and the Rev. Allen Myers of Apple’s Chapel Christian Church. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Apple’s Chapel Christian Church Cemetery.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 5 to 7 this evening.
