Gilbert L. Moore Sr.
BURLINGTON — Gilbert L. Moore Sr., 94, formerly of 575 N.C. 87 North, Burlington, passed away at 1:05 a.m. Sunday, July 31, 2011, in Clare Bridge at Burlington Manor.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Edith Beckom Moore and the son of the late Robert Vance Moore and the late Luna Somers Moore.
He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he was a Deacon and Elder Emeritus.
Before retiring from Sellars Department Store, he was employed with Glen Raven Mills for over 30 years. He played semi-pro baseball with the Green Top team and managed and pitched for the church softball team for many years. He was an avid horseshoe pitcher and golfer, accumulating over 70 trophies. Mr. Moore, along with his wife, Edith, loved to play in Setback and Rook tournaments.
He is survived by his two daughters, Iris Moore Holt and her husband, Jerry, of Burlington, and Gail Moore Fishman and her husband, Fred,ofMyrtle Beach, S.C.; one son, Gilbert L. Moore Jr. and his wife, Shelby, of Middleburg, N.C.; three grandchildren, Tonya Hammond and her husband, Jay, Leslie Roth and her husband, Kyle, and Wendy Nipper and her husband, Tommy; and five great-grandchildren, Will Hammond, Nicholas Hammond,
Maddie Hammond, Morgan Roth and Bailey Nipper.
He was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters.
The funeral service will be conducted at the Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2011 at 11 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. C. Powell Sykes. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at Rich and Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington on Monday, Aug. 1, from 6 until 8 p.m. Other times they will be at the residence of Iris and Jerry Holt, 2637 Catherine Drive, Burlington, N.C.
