BURLINGTON — Mr. Robert Cornelious Fitts, 72, of 3849A Burch Bridge Road, Burlington, died Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at 6:43 p.m. at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Betty Colene Moore Fitts, of the home, and the son of David Cornelious Fitts and Viola “Pinky” Crawford Fitts, both deceased.
A veteran of the United States Navy, Robert served with the Burlington Fire Department and retired from the Alamance Burlington School System. He was a member of Bethlehem Christian Church. Robert was very active in youth athletics in Northern Alamance County, coaching football, baseball, and basketball. He also umpired for many years. Robert loved spending time with his family and was an avid fisherman as well as a master carpenter.
In addition to his wife, of the home, survivors include two sons, Michael Robert Fitts and wife Nora of Ashburn, Va. and Mark Thomas Fitts and wife Sonya of Burlington; grandchildren, Andrea Lanier Fitts, Amelia Rae Fitts, Sydney Morgan Fitts, and Nathanael David Fitts; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Elam Franklin Fitts; and a sister, Estelle F. Pore.
The funeral service will be conducted at Bethlehem Christian Church on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Dave Gilbert and Pastor Bruce C. Church. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Christian Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Burlington
on Friday, June 22, 2012 from 6 until 8 p.m. At other times the family will be at the residence of the son, Mark Fitts, 4051 Burch Bridge Road, Burlington, N.C.
