Robert Vestal Gerringer
Marine Private first class Robert Vestal Gerringer, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thurman V. Gerringer of Burlington, was killer in action on Iwo Jima on March 6. He was a member of the Ninth Regiment of the third division which recently recaptured the Motayams airfield number two from the Japanese.
Enlisted in the Marine Corps in October, 1943, Pfc. Gerringer received training at the marine base in San Diego, Calif., and then went to Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, Calif., prior to going to sea. He was engaged in the campaigns of Guam and landed on Iwo on February 21. Before entering service he was an employee of the local Mayfair Mills.
Surviving are his parents, two sisters, Mrs. James E. Coleman of Burlington and Mrs. Hay Belcher also of here; and one brother, Pfc. James T. Gerringer serving with the army infantry in France; and his grandmother, Mrs. Tom W. Cheek of Burlington.
