BURLINGTON - Mr. Bobby Ogburn Stanfield, 80, of Burlington, N.C., passed away Monday, December 15, 2008 at 1:25 p.m., at Moses Cone Hospital, Greensboro, after a brief illness.
Mr. Stanfield was born March 12, 1928, in Rockingham County, N.C., to the late Paul Stanfield and Ara McKinney Stanfield.
He was a graduate of Reidsville High School, attended N.C. State College and received his degree in physics from Elon College. He retired from AT & T/Lucent Technologies after 43 years of service as a Senior Engineer. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, a 33rd degree Mason, Past Master of Lodge #721 AF&AM, lifetime member of Beulah Lodge #409 AF&AM, member of the Order of the Oriental Shrine and the Burlington Shrine Club. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War and a member of Front Street United Methodist Church, Burlington. Bobby was an avid whitewater canoeist and sailor, and was a longtime member of the Carolina Canoe Club and Blackbeard Sailing Club. He enjoyed building wooden boats and restoring Volkswagens.
Surviving are his wife, Vivian Stutts Stanfield; daughter, Melissa Stanfield Walker and husband, Walter E. Walker, Seagrove, N.C.; daughter, Dr. Robyn L. Stanfield and husband, Dr. Robert A. Kuharski, San Diego, Calif.; grandchildren, Sage E. Walker, Nathaniel E. Walker, David S. Kuharski and Andrew E. Kuharski; brother, Paul M. Stanfield and wife, Helen Vaughn Stanfield, of Danville, Va.; sister, Grey Stanfield Mobley and husband, William M. Mobley, deceased of Reidsville, N.C.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, December 19, at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Burlington with the Rev. Benjamin D. Alexander officiating.
Burial will follow in Alamance Memorial Park.
