February 26, 1934 ~ September 3, 2024 (age 90)
Harvey Lewis Sharpe, 90, of Burlington, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, September 3, 2024.
Harvey was born on February 26, 1934, to Harvey Dwight Sharpe and Mary Lewis Cross Sharpe. He was the brother of Ronald Dean (Bobby) Sharpe and had two half-brothers, Michael and David, all of whom preceded him in death.
Harvey is survived by his wife of 65 years, Merle Sutton Sharpe of Burlington, and their five children: Todd Sharpe (Laura) of Arden, Tim Sharpe (Anita) of Raleigh, Stephanie Sharpe Hetzel (Paul) of Isle of Palms, SC, Lesley Sharpe Dunaway of Greensboro, and Cindy Sharpe of Burlington. He also leaves behind four grandchildren: Emily Sharpe Harris (Cory) of Huntersville, Henry Sharpe (Christa) of Charlottesville, VA, Charlie Dunaway of Greensboro, and Grace Dunaway of Chapel Hill, along with four great-grandchildren: Joshua Harris, Ethan Sharpe, and twins Caroline and Hensley Harris.
Harvey played basketball and baseball at Williams High School and was a pitcher on the State Championship team in 1952. He graduated from Elon in 1956 and spent the next 30 years teaching and coaching at area high schools and YMCA church leagues. His basketball team at Pleasant Grove won the County Championship in 1960, and he later became the first basketball coach at Western Alamance High School.
Harvey met Merle in October 1951 at a Williams football game, and they were married in August 1959. He was a loving husband and faithful member of First Christian UCC, serving on various boards and committees.
In retirement, he loved gardening, playing golf, going to the beach, and cheering on the Yankees. But above all, Harvey was happiest with his family. He was always there for his kids and grandkids, attending and enjoying every game, graduation, special occasion, and family gathering.
A visitation will be held on Friday, September 6, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Rich & Thompson Funeral & Cremation Service at 306 Glenwood Avenue in Burlington. A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, September 7, at 11:00 a.m. at First Christian United Church of Christ in Burlington.
