Obituary Online notes for Mary Emma COBB
CHERRYVILLE Mrs. Mary Emma Cobb Mauney, died Monday, March 22, 2004, at Cleveland Regional Hospital, after a brief illness.

Mrs. Mauneys appreciation for and commitment to Musical Worship in Christian Churches led her to service in many Lutheran congregations in North Carolina as church organist and choir director, as she and her husband of 65 years, Dr. John D. Mauney served in positions of congregational leadership.

She was born Mary Emma Cobb on Aug. 21, 1920, in Rural Retreat, Va., to the Rev. William Gurley Cobb, a pastor of the United Lutheran Church in America, and his wife, Emma Lillian Akard.

Mrs. Mauney graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory in the class of 1940. Beginning the previous year, 1939, she was the wife and life partner of her husband, John David Mauney Jr. They were classmates at Lenoir-Rhyne and, after she accompanied him to the Southern Lutheran Theological Seminary, he was ordained as a Lutheran Pastor in 1943. They served together as worship leaders in the Lutheran Church in North Carolina for over 50 years.

Mrs. Mauney was certified by the Lutheran Church in America to serve as organist and choir director, and also as parish worker in Lutheran Churches in the ULCA. At the 2002 Assembly of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America she was presented a certificate as an Associate in Ministry of the Lutheran Church, where she had served so faithfully for many years.

Interment: Mountain Rest Cemetery, Kings Mountain.
