BURLINGTON – Janie Brown Whitaker, 94, passed away Tuesday, March 6th at Liberty Commons Nursing Center.
She was born January 1, 1924 in Guilford County to the late William Denny and Jemima Ingold Brown and was married to the late Lawrence Truitt Whitaker for forty-six years.

Janie retired from Verizon Communications after almost twenty years of service. She enjoyed gardening and growing flowers and loved animals especially cats and dogs. She sewed and made many things including quilts with her husband Lawrence.
She is survived by a special nephew Larry McAlister and his wife Eva, her caretakers and several other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, siblings; R. Vastine Brown, William Lee Brown, Irene B. Clapp, Holland W. Brown and Agnes Brown.
There will be a graveside service 2 p.m. Thursday at Shallow Ford Christian Church Cemetery by Rev. Todd Felkel. The family will receive friends 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. prior to the service at the cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Liberty Hospice, 847 Heather Rd., Burlington, NC 27215.
The family would like to thank Liberty Hospice, and the staff of Liberty Commons and a special thank you to Red Braxton for the love and care shown to Mrs. Whitaker.
