Obituary Online notes for William Basil GERRINGER
NEWPORT NEWS - William Basil Gerringer, 89, of Newport News, passed away Thursday Feb. 12, 2009 at Riverside Regional Medical Center, after a short illness.
Born in Alamance Co., N.C. on Oct. 22, 1919, he was the son of the late Robert and Annie Gerringer of Burlington, N.C. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Bobby and Dwight Gerringer; and one sister, Jean Garrison.
Basil began his career as a machinist in the Newport News Shipyard in 1942. He then served two years in the Navy on the USS Bowie, during WWII. After the Navy, Basil continued his machinist career at Langley Field (NASA). He was very proud that he was one of the first to help put the man on the moon by making the parts for the space shuttles. He retired from NASA in 1976, after 30 years of service.
Basil was an avid hunter and fisherman that loved to travel. He was the happiest being in the mountains and spending time with his family. Basil will be remembered for his unwavering love and devotion to his family and friends.
Basil is survived by Pattie B. Gerringer, his loving wife of 70 years; his son, Ronnie Gerringer of Newport News; his daughter, Sylvia Mt.Castle and husband, Vernon of Yorktown; five grandchildren, Bryan Blaker and wife, Debra of Woodbridge, Ty Gerringer of Newport News, Geneva Johnson and husband, Jeff of Tampa, Fla., Katie Gerringer and Patricia Gerringer of Staunton, one step-grandson, Jeffrey Mt.Castle and wife, Desiree of Orlando, Fla.; and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters, Celone Tickle, Doris Shue and Peggy Robertson all of Burlington, N.C.; numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009, at Peninsula Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 16, 2009, at Peninsula Memorial Park with Pastor Aaron West, officiating. 470, William Basil Gerringer
