Obituary Online notes for Oletha B. MACKIE
Oletha B. Herman, 96, formerly of Mitchell, NE. died Wednesday, May 3, 2006 at Northfield Medical Center in Gering, NE. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 6, 2006 at Jones Mortuary in Mitchell, internment followed at the Mitchell Cemetery. Memorials in her name may be given to the North Platte Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross. Jones Mortuary assisted the family in arrangements.

Oletha was born September 10, 1909 at Broken Bow, Nebraska to Arthur F. and Claire B. (Molly) Mackie. She grew up and received her education there and graduated from Broken Bow High School. She attended Nebraska Wesleyn University in Lincoln and taught school for a number of years.

She married Willis A. Herman June 29, 1934 at Broken Bow. She and her husband moved to Mitchell in 1939, where he established a law practice. Oletha was very involved in the Mitchell community, assisting Willis to establish his law practice. They lived in Mitchell until 1982 when they moved to Northfield Villa in Gering where she has resided since.

Oletha was very active in her children lives as they were growing up, she was involved with Camp Fire, Girl Scouts, Bluebirds, both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, the American Red Cross and was very active in the Nebraska Republican Party, serving as a delegate to the National Republican Convention and on the local election boards. She hosted a local radio and television show and was instrumental in bringing the Make-it-Yourself with Wool Pageant to Nebraska. She also enjoyed helping her husband restore old homes on properties he had purchased. She was also a member and past Matron of Sunflower Chapter #214 Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her daughter Sharyl Ann Woodstein and her husband David of Aurora, CO., her son Willis A. (Tony) Herman and his wife Judy of Bellevue, Ne.; her grandchildren Shelly and her husband Jeff Lincoln of Elkhorn, NE., Randall Jon and his wife Tammy Barthuly of Lewisville, TX; Troy and his wife Carol Herman of Scottsbluff, NE.; and step-grandchildren Alan and his wife Mitsy Mantegna of Omaha, NE. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren and one step great-grandchild. Her parents, her husband, two brothers, and one sister proceded her in death.
