A Funeral for Willis A. Herman, 80, of Gering who died June 25, 1987 in the Northfield Villa Med. Center was held Sunday, June28, 1987 at 2:00 p.m. in the Federated Church in Mitchell with the Rev. Floyd J Sauer officiating. Burial was in the Mitchell Cemetery with Masonic services by Mitchell Lodge.
Memorials have been established to the Shrine Burn Institute, the Alzheimer Research Foundation or Northfield Villa. Jones Mortuary of Mitchell was in charge of arrangements.
He was born June 25, 1906 in Williston, North Dakota, the son of Gotlieb and Molly (Bohne) Herman and received his early education in North Dakota. At age 12 he worked on the ranch and attended school in Hyannis, graduating from High School there.
He also graduated from Nebraska Wesleyn University and the Nebraska School of Law and practiced law in Mitchell from 1939 until 1951. He was co-founder of Nile Valley Federal Savings and Loan Association of Scottsbluff and was manager there from 1931 until 1978.
He married Oletha Mackie on June 29, 1934 in Broken Bow, and they had lived in Mitchell from 1939 until 1982 when they moved to Northfield Villa Retirement Center.
He was a member of the Federated Churches in Mitchell, was a past Mayor of the City of Mitchell and had served as City Councilman and City Attorney. He was past President of the Nebraska League of Savings and Loan Association, and Past President of the Mitchell School Board and one of the original members of the Northfield Villa Board of Directors. He was a member of the Mitchell Masonic Lodge, past Patron of the Sunflower Chapter #214 Order of Eastern Star, a member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry at Alliance, and a member of Tehama Temple of the Shrine in Hasting as well as a past president of the Panhandle Shrine Club, and a member of the Nebraska Bar Association.
Survivors include his wife, a son, W. A. (Tony) Herman and wife Shelia of Mitchell; daughter Mrs. Jack (Sharyl Ann) Hamphill of Omaha; four grandchildren and four step-grandchildren. He was also survived by his sister Irene Becker of Denver, Colorado and Bernice Schieb of Conrue, Texas and
