Mr. Curtis Miles Saunders

    ELON — Mr. Curtis Miles Saunders, 56, of 6176 Kerrs Chapel Road, died Saturday, April 18, 2009, at his home.
    BorninAlamanceCounty,he was retired from the Alamance Burlington School System. He taught in the first classes at Western Middle School when it was newly opened and at his retirement was one of the few original teachers still there. Miles’ teaching career covered a broad area of his interest and talents which was often reflected in the accomplishments of his students in the Music, Chorus and Drama Department. He also taught at Western High School.
    Survivors include a daughter, Monica Johnson and husband Ryan of Burlington; a son, Grant Saunders and fiancée, Ashley Maiolo of Raleigh and a sister, Jewel Williams and husband Robert of Burlington.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis Scott Saunders and Nancy Miles Saunders.
    The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Friday, April 24 at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham.
    The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday evening from 6 to 8 and at other times at the home of Jewel and Robert Williams, 1515 Hawthorne Lane, Burlington, N.C. The family will also receive friends following the service on Friday at the funeral home. Public viewing will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday.
    Memorials may be made to the Western Middle School Choral Program in memory of Miles Saunders for his dedication and to encourage the students’ efforts to enjoy music through dramatic and choral expressions, c/oWestern Middle School, 2100 Eldon Drive, Elon, N.C. 27244.
