Raleigh Doake Simmons

ELON — Raleigh Doake Simmons, 83, of 1821 N.C. 87 North, died at 5 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at Alamance Regional Medical Center. A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of Frances Gwynn Simmons, who survives, and the son of the late John Doake and Mamie Miles Simmons. He was employed with Coca-Cola Bottling Co. for 13 years and retired from Sealtest Dairy after 21 years. After retirement he drove a school bus for the Western School District for 11 years. He was a member of Bethel United Church of Christ and was a former Board of Director of Altamahaw-Ossipee Volunteer Fire Department. Survivors other than his wife of the home include a son, Jim Simmons and his wife Joyce of Elon; a daughter, Mrs. Gray Cole and her husband John of Burlington; four sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Allred of Elon, Mrs. Eva Coble and her husband Gray of Graham, Mrs. Sue Brooks and her husband Herb of Burlington and Mrs. Doris Simpson and her husband H.H. Jr., of Burlington; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Edgar Simmons, Claude Simmons and Earl Simmons. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church by Elder Wallis Smith, pastor. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will be in Gilliam’s Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the residence.
