Shirley Smith Vernon
January 14, 1935 ~ May 7, 2024 (age 89)

Shirley Smith Vernon, 89, of Mebane, NC passed away at UNC Hospitals in Hillsborough on Tuesday, May 7, 2024.

A native of Caswell County, she was the wife of 66 years to the late Richard Hogue Vernon and the daughter of Joseph Thomas Smith and Sallie Susan Oakley Smith, both deceased.

Shirley retired after 42 years with Western Electric, and also was a waitress for 40 years at Western Steakhouse every Friday and Saturday nights. She played the piano for over 60 years for Hebron Community Church where she was a member. She loved Carolina basketball and enjoyed watching baseball. Shirley loved gardening and would provide fresh cut flowers for the church. Yellow roses were one of her favorite flowers. She was known for her famous Carmel cake. She enjoyed having a meal with family especially at Zacks and Cracker Barrell ordering all her favorite foods.

Survivors include a son, Richard Keith Vernon and wife Darlene; daughter, Pamela Vernon Lynch and husband Joey; grandchildren, Keith Vernon, Jr., Heather V. Cobb, Matthew Vernon, Joel Lynch, Jr., Jacob Lynch, and Jared Lynch; 8 great grandchildren; and a sister, Marian Montgomery and husband Mike Montgomery. She was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Smith and sister, Mary Ellen English.

A graveside service will be conducted at Hebron Methodist Church Cemetery on Saturday, May 11, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. by Rev. Ronnie Byrd with the family receiving friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. at the fellowship hall prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to Hebron Methodist Church, 5188 119 South, Mebane, NC 27302.
