Obituary Online notes for Nadine CHILTON
Edited:
Nadine Chilton Kernodle was born on December 26, 1928 in a small house in Caswell County NC. She was one of six children of Vander Bryant Chilton and Gussie McKinney Chilton. She spent 85 years on her walk through life serving God every step of the way. She completed her journey on October 23, 2014 and graduated to life everlasting. "Well done my good and faithful servant."
Nadine grew up on the farm and learned the value of hard work, honesty, the Golden Rule and Christian living. Her ambition and drive to make a difference in the world led her in many directions. She attended Asbury College, the Oklahoma Summer Institute of Linguistics, Columbia Bible College, Guilford College and lastly UNC Greensboro where she received her Masters Degree at age 64 (While obtaining her Masters Degree it was discovered that Nadine had a massive brain tumor, removed shortly after graduation.) She worked as a secretary for Jefferson Standard Life Insurance, several law firms in Greensboro and at Trinity Church. After receiving her Masters she worked as a licensed professional counselor for 15 years.
After much thought and prayer she and her husband Roy left their jobs in the U.S. to work with Wycliffe Bible Translators on the mission field in Ecuador shortly after 5 missionaries were killed by Auca Indian spears in 1955. Nadine typed the transcript of The Dayuma Story which was later made in to a movie called End of The Spear. While in Ecuador they were rewarded with a son and a daughter.
Nadine faithfully served God in everything she did from teaching Sunday School, leading the Christian Business and Professional Women's Council, speaking at Church conferences, working at the Urban Ministry, as a Counselor and in many other ways. She and her husband Roy were 2 of 21 individuals who founded Trinity United Methodist Church in Greensboro in 1955. She studied the Bible daily, lived a consistently Christian life and was involved in every church activity possible. She had a great sense of humor and always enjoyed telling jokes, writing poems and making people laugh. She became quite well known for her "Minnie Pearl" act and Hillbilly preacher routine having officiated many unofficial weddings.
Nadine loved and was so proud of her family, whether it was a beach or camping trip, picnic at Nell Jean's, holiday or just a lazy Sunday afternoon's playing Scrabble, Rook, taking walks or riding bikes. She was most concerned that all of her family knew God and prayed faithfully every day for each one.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Kernodle, father Vander Bryant Chilton, her mother Gussie McKinney Chilton, three brothers, Gaylord, Curtis and Donald Chilton and one sister, Vivian Chilton.
The family will receive friends on Saturday evening, 6-8 p.m., at Citty Funeral Home in Reidsville, followed by a memorial service at Trinity Church on Sunday at 2 p.m., with a graveside service to follow at Lowes United Methodist Church of Reidsville on Highway 87.
The family thanks everyone at Blumenthal Nursing Center for their exceptional care of Nadine. In lieu of flowers Nadine would appreciate memorial contributions to the Lowes United Methodist Church of Reidsville cemetery fund or to the Trinity Evangelical Covenant Christian Church in Greensboro's mission or general fund.
