David Lee Griggs, 56, of Martinsville, VA passed away at his home with his devoted wife by his side on Friday, October 2, 2015 after a long, heroic battle with cancer.
David was born on February 16, 1959 in Danville, VA to the late Phillip Kayden Griggs and Mary Rice Griggs of Ruffin, NC.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Deborah Earles Griggs, of the home; a son, Michael Griggs and wife, Paige, of Ruffin, NC; a daughter, Diane Willard of NC ; a step-son, Travis Shively, of Martinsville, VA; a sister, Phyllis Griggs of Ruffin, NC; two brothers, Steve Griggs and wife, Debra, of Ruffin, NC and Arch Griggs and wife, Vanessa, of La Grange, GA; and four grandchildren, Megan Miller, Andy Miller, Sedarian Willard and Aubrie Griggs.
David graduated from Bartlett Yancey Senior High School of Caswell County, NC in 1977. He served in the United States Marine Corp from 1977 to 1983 as an Electrical Equipment Repairman. He served in the states and abroad and was honorably discharged as a Corporal.
He was a pit-crew member for several Late Model Stock Race Car Teams in the early 80's and mid 90's and was a volunteer for the Pelham Volunteer Fire Dept in Pelham, NC. He was, also, a coach for community youth sports.
David was employed by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co in Danville, VA as a Maintenance Technician and a member of the United Steel Workers Union Local 831. He was a member and served as a Trustee of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, #3739, Collinsville.
He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. He enjoyed racing, dancing and reading, as well as playing pool and motorcycle riding. He was a fun loving, life of the party type of man who, also, enjoyed quiet time with his family.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at Wright Funeral Services Chapel at 4:00 pm on Sunday, October 18, 2015 with family visitation one hour before the service.
The Rev. Susan Spangenberg will officiate.
