Wayne "Pete" Barker

Elon – Wayne Franklin “Pete” Barker, 82, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 5, 2022 at his home with his family by his side.  He was born on October 18, 1939 in Alamance County to the late Rufus Leon Barker and Bessie Pryor Barker, and was the husband of 63 years to Glenda Hensley Barker who survives.

Pete was the former owner and operator of Barker’s Mobile Glass for 22 years.  He retired as the custodian at Western Alamance Middle School with the Alamance Burlington School System. Pete was a member of Stony Creek Presbyterian Church where he served as the head usher, a deacon, worked the sound system, charge of the acolytes, former secretary and was on the board of directors. He was a volunteer fire fighter with AO Fire Department for over 25 years. Pete was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend who will be dearly missed.

Survivors other than his wife, Glenda Barker includes a son, Wayne “Sid” Sidney Barker and wife Annette; granddaughter, Kimberly “Kim” Jernigan and husband Donnie; great grandchildren, Trenton, Bryson and Daisy “Butterfly” Jernigan; step grandchildren, Eddie Whitman and wife Tabitha, Kristi Lewis and husband J.W.; step great grandchildren, Anniston Lewis, Hunter Whitman, Haiden Langley and McKenzie Langley; a sister, Nell Gordon and several nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Donald Barker and a sister, Joan Richardson.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00pm Thursday, September 8, 2022 at Stony Creek Presbyterian Church with the burial to follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 5 to 7pm Wednesday at Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory and other times at the son’s residence in Yanceyville.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the hospice staff and nurses for their compassion and loving care that was shown to Pete during his illness.
