LAMBSBURG, Va. -- The man hit and killed in a trooper-involved accident last weekend was buried near his family home in Lambsburg, Va., today.
The burial was a powerful tribute to Romie Bobbitt, a veteran and grandfather whose family says he loved NASCAR and never failed to help someone in need.
Investigators believe Bobbitt was involved in an accident on the interstate in Surry County and was on the side of the road, perhaps checking out the damage to his vehicle. At some point, he may have tried to cross the road and, according to investigators, Highway Patrol Trooper D.H. Holt hit him in her patrol vehicle. Bobbitt died at the scene and Trooper Holt, a 19-year veteran of the Highway Patrol, had minor injuries. She is on administrative duty until the investigation is complete, which NCHP said is standard protocol.

Family friends of the Bobbitt family tell FOX8 the night he was killed, Bobbitt was headed to a Bingo benefit event. Just an example of how he was always trying to help others, said Corey Carson. “He was the type of person if there was something needed to be done, he would do it. A hole in the yard and he seen it, he was gonna fill it in. Somebody needed help, he was gonna go help them.”
Carson, along with another family friend, Brandon Jones, are Surry County EMS workers with Romie Bobbitt’s son. They said Bobbitt was like a father to many of the local emergency workers.
They are leading fundraising efforts to help cover the funeral costs.
Bobbitt served in the military for eight years and spent much of his later life enjoying construction and masonry work. “He pulled his time for our country and to me we ought to lift our veterans up,” Jones said.
Carson added, “We are talking to the community to see, hey, this guy loved the community. Let’s love him back.”
The Bobbitt family expressed their thanks to all of the emergency workers and investigators who helped out the night of the accident. 470, Romie Clark Bobbitt-Obituary
