Mr. James Ralph Somers
ELON COLLEGE — Mr. James Ralph Somers, 87, of 1439 N.C. 87 North, died at 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Vera Holt Somers, who survives, and the son of Mr. Samuel Jacob Somers and Mrs. Emma Ross Somers, both deceased. He retired after 30 years from the N.C. Department of Revenue. He was a member of the Bula Masonic Lodge No. 409 AF & AM for 52 years. He was a member of the Oasis Shrine Club of Charlotte, a charter member of the AO Fire Department, a charter member of the AO Civitan Club, a charter member of the North Carolina State Employees’ Association and a lifelong member of Shiloh United Methodist Church, where he was a charter member of the Methodist Men.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two sisters, Mrs. Alice S. Kearns of Keansville and Mrs. Beatrice S. Tew of Tallahassee, Fla.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mrs. Myrtle S. Wagoner, Mrs. Lillian S. Kernodle and Mrs. Ollie S. Matkins; and two brothers, Mr. Edward Somers and Mr. Frank Somers.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Rich and Thompson Chapel by the Rev. Guy Soule. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 Monday evening and at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
