Obituary Online notes for “Smoke” C. P. WAYNE
C.P. " Smoke" Wayne died November 12,2010 at his home in Whiteville. He was born August 8, 1926 at (Wannanish) Lake Waccamaw to Nora Josephine Pierce and Henry Newkirk Wayne.
Mr. Wayne was a member of the First Baptist Church in Whiteville where he was in the John the Baptist Sunday School Class and served as Brotherhood President, Sunday School Superintendent, and Sunday School Superintendent of the Columbus Baptist Association.
Earlier in life, he was a Deacon in his home church in Lake Waccamaw. "Smoke" graduated from Hallsboro High School. During World War II, he joined the United States Army and served in the Pacific Theatre. He graduated from Campbell College and then Wake Forest College with a B.B.A. in 1951. Smoke completed graduate studies at Purdue University. He earned his Chartered Life Underwriter (C.L. U.) designation. In 1953 "Smoke" began his more than fifty year career in the life and health insurance business. He was affiliated with Liberty Life Insurance Company and later began his own Independent insurance agency in Whiteville.
"Smoke" loved being around people and strived to serve his fellow man in all his many Endeavors. He was a dedicated member of the Whiteville Lions Club since 1951. He served as President of the Whiteville Lions Club, NC Lions District Governor (1970-1971), NC Lion State Council Chairman (1970-1971), and was elected President of the NC Lions Association for the Blind in 1976.
"Smoke" was an active supporter of the Boys and Girls Home of NC and served as a trustee for many Years. He was on the Board of Southeastern Community College and was one of the founding board members of the Whiteville Housing Authority. C.P. was active with the Boy Scouts of America and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award. "Smoke" was a member of the Whiteville Chamber of Commerce for many years and served as President. He was on many committees to improve Whiteville and Columbus County.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years Ethel Rogers Wayne , a daughter Nancy Rogers Wayne Crabtree and her husband Richard Scott Crabtree, his grandchildren Caroline, Scott Wayne, John and William Crabtree of Lake Waccamaw, a sister in-law , Mary B. Wayne of Brunswick, and many nieces, nephews , cousins, and friends.
"Smoke" enjoyed life and strived to be a friend to everyone. He was a great supporter of Whiteville. He was a great supporter of Whiteville and Columbus County and shall be greatly missed.
Funeral Service will be Monday, November 15, 2010 at the Whiteville First Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Ron Hinson officiating with burial following in the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday in the Church Parlor from (9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. ) prior to the service.
