Obituary Online notes for Overton H. ENGLISH
Overton suffered a serious back injury in the year 1919, when he was getting out logs on the steep Minnie Smith Mountain. A log rolled over him, and he was unable to walk for two years. As soon as Overton could manage to get around by using a cane, he purchased a wagon and team of horses and started a peddling route that covered parts of North
Carolina and Tennessee. Summer and winter, he persisted in this difficult jolting over the steep, rough, and often muddy roads, stopping in the homes along the road to take orders for his next trip and to purchase eggs, chickens, etc., from the house-wives. With his genial disposition and scrupulously honest dealings, he was able not only to earn a good living for his family but also to make many and lasting friends. His children were Leah, Raleigh, Sevada, Aula, Ruth, and Max.

Overton's son, Raleigh, married Edna Buckner, daughter of Jake Buckner, a store owner in Upper Laurel who had moved to Mars Hill. Edna was a school teacher, and she was chosen by Mars Hill College as alumna of the year in 1979 This couple was very successful in farming, cattle raising, trading, etc., and accumulated much land in Madison County. They sold a large boundary to Bald Mountain Development, a part of which was later called Wolf Laurel Enterprises.
