Aaron Burr Ponder, 75, of 2497 Laurel Valley Road, Mars Hill, died Thursday, July 31, 2003, after an extended illness.
He was the son of the late Levi and Savada English Ponder.
He was a lifelong resident of Madison County. Mr. Ponder was retired from Madison County School System as maintenance supervisor on December 18, 1992. He also worked 25 years at Wolf Laurel and was a retired farmer. He served as Democrat Judge at Ebbs Chapel Precinct for many years.
Mr. Ponder was a member of Laurel Valley Baptist Church, where he served as chairman of the deacon board for 30 years. He also served as Sunday school superintendent, choir director and was on the building fund committee.
He was a member of Mars Hill VFW Post 5483. He was a Marine Corps veteran, serving in the Korean War in 1951.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Betty Norton Ponder; daughter, Loretta Shelton and husband, Allen, of Mars Hill; son, Lane Ponder and wife Beckie, of Mars Hill; two sisters Ardis Honeycutt and Alma Blankenship, both of Mars Hill; granddaughter, Rachel Shelton; and a special niece, Hannah Norton.
The funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Upper Laurel Baptist Church. The Revs. Kermit Ball and Ebb Jenkins will officiate.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The graveside rites will be conducted by Mars Hill VFW Post 5483
