Obituary Online notes for Betty Jean NORTON
Betty Norton Ponder, 83, of Mars Hill, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 11, 2021.

Betty was born May 14, 1937 to the late, Bud and Leatha Cody Norton.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Aaron Burr Ponder, sister, Linda Coates, brother, Tony Norton, and nephews, Cody and Colby Norton.


A lifelong resident of Madison County, she was the oldest member of Laurel Valley Baptist Church. Betty retired from farming, but always loved to plant and work in her flower garden.

Left to cherish her memory is, her son, Lane Ponder and wife, Beckie of Mars Hill; her daughter, Loretta Shelton and husband, Allen of Mars Hill; three grandchildren: Rachel, Mitchell and Michael Shelton, of Mars Hill; sister, Faye Phillips; brother Roy Norton (Renee); sister’s in-law, Ardis Honeycutt and Alma Blankenship; niece, Hannah N. Shelton (TJ); nephews, Steve & Stanley Norton, Jeffrey Coates, and Owen & Randall Blankenship; best friend of 53 years, Loretta Carver; and her precious dog, Bailey.

A graveside service will be held on Sunday, March 14, 2021, at 2:00 pm at Upper Laurel Baptist Church cemetery with Pastor Junior Hensley officiating. COVID-19 guidelines must be followed.
