Obituary Online notes for Virgil C. BOONE
Virgil C. Boone, 88, of Speedwell, Va., died Tuesday, February 17, 2004 at his home. He was born in Grayson County, a son of the late John G. and Cora Elizabeth Hackler Boone. He was retired from the Va. Game and Inland Fisheries and the U.S. Forest Service with 38 years of service.

Mr. Boone was also a retired Bank Director of the Bank of Speedwell, Premier Bank and First Va. Bank, S.W., for many years. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and Mt. Airy Masonic Lodge #226, A.F. and A.M. in Rural Retreat. He organized the Speedwell Volunteer Fire Department and served as the Fire Chief for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Alice Marie Boone; one son, John D. "J.D." Boone of Speedwell; one sister-in-law, Ovella H. Boone of Salem; one brother-in-law, James H. Sult of Winkelman, Ariz.; two nieces, Mary Lou Foster and husband, George, Shirley Ann Smith, all of Roanoke; special caregiver, Wanda McFarland of Speedwell. Many very special friends and cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 20, 2004, at 11 a.m. in the Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor Joe Shumate officiating and assisted by Rev. Jerry Bell. Interment will follow in the Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday or at the home at any time. Mt. Airy Masonic Lodge #226 will conduct a memorial service Thursday at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Speedwell Fire Department, whose members will be pallbearers.

Barnett Funeral Home, Wytheville, Va., is in charge of the arrangements.
