Obituary Online notes for Archie Leon HELMS
Mr. Archie L. Helms, 78, of Salisbury, and formerly of Greensboro, went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 1, 2009, at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, N.C.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5, at Forbis & Dick North Elm Street Funeral Home Chapel in Greensboro. Interment will follow at Westminster Gardens Cemetery with Police Department and Masonic Rites.
Archie was born on April 21, 1931, in Union County, N.C., (Olive Branch Community). He was the son of the late Odis H. and Fonnie Moore Helms.
He was educated at the New Salem High School and served as a Military Policeman with the 8105th Army Unit , and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, from 1952-1955. Archie retired in 1987 from the Greensboro Police Department with over 31 years of service. He was a member of the Gate City Lodge #694 A.F. & A.M. the Greensboro Moose Lodge #685 and the Tarheel Moose Legion #158 and the N.C. Retired Peace Officers Association, and was a lifetime member of the Greensboro Police Club.
He is preceded in death by his half brother, Haskel M. Helms, who was killed in action in Germany in 1945.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley B. Helms, of the home; son and daughter-in- law, Michael L. and Jeannie Helms of Woodbridge, Va.; and his sisters and brothers-in-law, Ometa and Walter Marley of Candor, N.C., and Leta Ann and Andrew Hindreth of Polkton, N.C.; sisters, Margaret Hindreth of Polkton, N.C., and Sylvia Jean Farlow of Robbins, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
