Gertis Hubert Oakley
BURLINGTON — Mr. Gertis Hubert Oakley, 84, of 1329 Dogwood St., Burlington died at his residence on Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011 following three months of failing health.
A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of 49 years to the late Francis Ross Oakley and the son of James Lundy Oakley and Viola Kimbro Oakley, both deceased. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean Conflict. Hubert was a supervisor for Springwood Textiles and Fairstone Fabrics in Gibsonville. Following his retirement, he was a security guard for West Point Stevens for many years. He was an avid bird hunter and attended Shallow Ford Christian Church.
Survivors include his daughter, Susan Oakley Pew and husband John of New Jersey; two sons, Mike H. Oakley and wife Lee Ann and Charles Anthony “Chuck” Oakley and wife Jennifer, all of Burlington; seven grandchildren, Jess and Jake Pew, Stacie O. Grooms and husband Chris, Eric Oakley and fianceé Allison Gilliam, Bradyn, Zackery and Ethan Oakley; one greatgrandchild, Konner Grooms; two sisters, Pat Byrd and Doris Mansfield and husband Lloyd; two brothers, James L. “Jake” Oakley and wife Helen and Gene Oakley and wife Joyce; and a sisterin-law, Ethel Oakley.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde Oakley and Thomas “Tom” Oakley.
The funeral service will be conducted at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Burlington on Friday, Nov. 4, 2011 at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Dave Gilbert and Dr. S. Perry. Burial will follow in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the Rich &Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. Other times they will be at the residence.
