Mary Ella Scott, passed away on February 8, 2025, at the age of 68.
Born on February 18, 1956, to the late Governor Robert "Bob" Scott and Jessie Rae Osborne Scott, Mary's life was one of vibrant engagement, marked by her love for family, her passion for poetry, and her innate ability to connect with everyone she met.
She graduated Eastern Alamance High School in 1974. Mary's pursuit of higher education led her to Lees-McRae College, where she graduated in 1976. It was there that she also showcased her athletic talents as a valued member of the tennis team, demonstrating her competitive yet gracious nature.
Her love for writing poetry was a testament to her reflective and thoughtful soul. Mary's capacity for making friends was unparalleled; she never met a stranger. Her presence was a source of joy and comfort to all who knew her.
Mary's legacy is carried on by her loving family.
She is survived by her devoted daughter, Christy Hobbs and husband, Wes; her son, Andrew Cagle. Her twin sister, Meg Scott Phipps and husband, Robert, Susan Scott Sutton and husband Louis, and Jan Scott and husband Jeff, will hold dear the memories of their sister's unwavering support and affection. Mary was a proud grandmother to JT and Waylon Hobbs. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews to cherish her memory.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, W. Kerr Scott.
A Celebration of Mary’s life will be held on Thursday, February 13, 2025 at 11am at Hawfields Presbyterian Church with Pastor David Ealy officiating.
