Jessie Rae Scott
Jessie Rae Scott, treasured mother, grandmother and friend, passed away on December 26, 2010. Mrs. Scott had been hospitalized since July after she suffered a fall. She died peacefully at the Hillcrest Convalescence Center in Durham, N.C. She was the wife of the late N.C. Governor Robert “Bob” Walter Scott and her death brings to close a life of loving service to her family, church and community. Jessie Rae and Bob were married 58 years before his death in 2009. She is also predeceased by their son, W. Kerr Scott.

She is survived by sisters, Myrtle Moore and Madelin Grooms, sister-in-law, Pauline Osborne, daughters, Mary Scott, Meg Phipps, Susan Sutton, Jan Scott and grandchildren, Christy Cagle, Andrew Cagle, Scott Sutton, Susan Sutton Henkel, Elisabeth Clark-Sutton, Margaret Phipps and Rob Phipps.

Born in 1929 in Swepsonville, N.C., Jessie Rae Osborne attended Alexander Wilson High School where she and Bob Scott were classmates. She graduated with a degree in business from Greensboro Women’s College — now UNC-Greensboro — and married Bob in 1951.

Although she is best known as a First Lady of North Carolina, Jessie Rae had her own part to play in North Carolina history. She was a sought after speaker where her unpretentious style and sense of humor graced many events. She worked tirelessly for the passage of the constitutional amendment for equal rights for women in North Carolina as well as ran for Commissioner of Labor in the mid 1970’s. She was an ardent supporter of the American Cancer Society, including serving as chairman of the board and president of the N.C. Division of the American Cancer Society in 1982. She received the Society’s Sword of Hope award in 1982 and was named an Honorary Life Member in 1995. She was a 1979 recipient of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Alumni Distinguished Service Award.

After many years of service to the state, Jessie Rae spent her remaining years on the family farm where she focused on her children, grandchildren, friends and community. She will be dearly missed.

A funeral service celebrating the life of Jessie Rae Scott will be held at Hawfields Presbyterian Church, 2115 S. 119, Mebane, at 11 a.m., Wednesday, December 29. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to one of the following: The Scott Family Collection at Alamance Community College, the Hawfields Presbyterian Church, the N.C. division of the American Cancer Society, or WEC International-USA.

McClure Funeral Home of Mebane is serving the Scott family.
