Obituary Online notes for David Roger PRICE
DAVID ROGER PRICE, 62, OF OAK RIDGE, PASSED AFTER HIS short battle with lung cancer to be with his God in Heaven, on Thursday, June 26, 2014 at Beacon Place/Hospice.
A celebration service of David's life will be held Saturday, July 5th at 2 p.m. The service will be held at St. John's United Methodist Church, 1304 Merritt Drive, Greensboro. Vernon Farrington, Neil Brower and Phyllis Coates will officiate.
He leaves behind his bride and "his baby" of almost 37 years, Diann Troxler Price.
A multitude of family, close friends, and associates will miss him daily. His compassion, his understanding, and his incredible sense of humor will be cherished forever.
Born in Greensboro on October 26, 1951 to the late Shirley Shelton Price and the late Bob Price, David was also welcomed by admiring grandparents Dorothy ("Dottie") and Phil Shelton and Alexander and Ola Price. His great-grandparents America Seay Johnson and Dr. Arthur Johnson were an incredible influence on his life.
David is a member of St. John's United Methodist Church. He sang in the choir and provided solos for services including weddings and funerals at many locations. He taught Bible School to children, an adult Sunday school class, and was a member and then president of the United Methodist Men.
After graduating from Ben L. Smith High School, he received honors from Davidson County Community College. David then transferred to Guilford College where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business.
The unusual thing about David's work ethic and tenacity is that after starting to work at age 14, he worked full time throughout his college career and until he became ill.
He went to work for Arnold-Oroweat Bread Distributors and later became a manager. After a time traveling with Shasta Beverage he decided to take off the shirt and tie and leave the company car behind to buy a Pepperidge Farm bread franchise. After many years working very hard growing the franchise, David sold it and looked for other opportunities to keep him busy. He enjoyed working for the 2010 Census Bureau. David then worked for Arnold Bread Company (Bimbo) again and enjoyed delivering bread as his customers enjoyed his daily visits.
David had an incredible love of music and traveled with the City of Greensboro's Razz-Ma-Tazz to Alaska, Nova Scotia, England and Scotland, singing and dancing in venues abroad. He was on stage at the Carolina Theatre on many occasions. His pure baritone voice led him to front three Big Bands: Kings of Swing, Doug Woolard Big Band and finally he had the privilege of being the male singer for the Bert Massengale Big Band Orchestra.
For twenty plus years David was a member of the Barney Chapter of the Andy Griffith ReRun Watchers Club. He formed life-long bonds with the other members of the group and he considered each one a special friend. He has missed their fellowship since becoming ill.
David had a great love of watching and playing sports. His Atlanta Braves, Washington Redskins, Duke Blue Devils and Carolina Hurricanes all made for great trips with friends and family. He enjoyed golf, and typical of David never took it too seriously.
He was previously a member of Citizens for International Understanding that led to an exchange trip for David and Diann to Australia.
Left behind to cherish his memory are sister and brother-in-law Linda and Vic Johnson of Trinity, Vincent Price and Susan Price of Greensboro and Nancy and Dexter Hayes of High Point.
His relationship with the Troxler in-law family began in 1971. They include his surrogate mom Aileen Routh Troxler and in-laws Gary and Elna Troxler of Greensboro and Patti and Ernie Panetti of Rock Hill, SC. David and Diann had no biological children. However, nieces, nephews, and "borrowed children" from friends were cherished. They include Brian, Angela, Brianna and Brayden Johnson; Wendy, Scott, Paul Stuart and Grace Johnson; Jeremy, Dasha, Cheyenne and Emily Oxendine; Brian, Fabiana, Alexandra, Nicholas and Isabella Troxler; Scott, Ashley and Ava Troxler; John and Christy Troxler and Chandler Almond; Grayson and Coble Panetti.
Every child in his life held a special place in his heart. One of his last wishes was that the children remember him and something he taught them, even if it was just his sense of humor. There are so many children not blood related and yet were so close to his heart. These include Dale, Brooke and Cameron; Elizabeth and Marusch; Katherine and Brad; Lauren and Amanda; Bethany and Parker; Matthew and David; Josh and Sam; Leslie and Amy and so many others.
One of the most endearing qualities of David was his ability to make and keep friends. Just a few include his mentor the late Jackie Johnson; the late Dale Wood; Chris Dennis and Vernon Farrington.
His illness began April 2013 when he had totally unexpected quadruple cardiac by-pass. Since that time David has spent many hours bird watching, enjoying the new "ME TV" and "loving on" his four legged children, Boots, Suki, and Opie. There were so many weekly trips to Baptist/Wake Forest Hospital, including five surgeries. He admired and loved his doctors, Michael Goodman, M.D., Michael Haughton, M.D., Richard McQuellon, Ph.D, and the numerous nurses and attendants.
Thanks also to in home Hospice of Greensboro and Beacon Place. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to St. John's United Methodist Church Mission Fund or Greensboro Urban Ministry.
The family will receive friends after the service for refreshments and fellowship. Please stay if only for a few minutes.470, David Roger Price
