Obituary Online notes for “Mae” Estelle Mae McCANLESS
RURAL HALL, NC ~ Mrs. Estelle "Mae" McCanless Merritt, 88, died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.

She was born March 22, 1914 in Guilford County to the late James L. and Mamie Isley McCanless.

Mrs. Merritt had been a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in King for the past 66 years and was a charter member of the United Methodist Women at Bethel UMC.

Mrs. Merritt is survived by three daughters: Dolores Tesh and husband Carlton and Sandy Pollard and husband Bill, all of Germanton, and Wanda Bigelow and husband Bill of Kernersville; a son, Richard B. Merritt and wife Juanita of Charlotte; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a number of half brothers and half sisters; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Roscoe Blaine Merritt, in 1981; a granddaughter, Robin Denise Tesh; a grandson, Wayne Pollard; a brother, Charles L. McCanless; and several half brothers and half sisters.

Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Sunday, April 21, 2002, at Bethel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Rickey Spencer officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall.

The family requests that memorials be made to Bethel United Methodist Church (United Methodist Women), P.O. Box 1314, Rural Hall, NC 27045; or Hospice & Palliative Care, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
