Winston-Salem - Robert L. Blevins, 99, of Winston-Salem, NC died at Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community on Friday, March 10, 2017.
He was born in Bakersville, NC on July 12, 1917 to Taylor D. and Inez Young Blevins.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nell Blevins and his brothers James Blevins and George Blevins both of Bakersville, NC.
He graduated from Bowman High School in Bakersville, NC in 1933, from Milligan College in Johnson City, TN in 1938 and received an MA degree from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1946.
He served in the Army Air Corps from 1942-1946 and was stationed in India from 1943-1945.
He was employed by the Mitchell County, NC school system from 1938-1942 and by the Mecklenburg County, NC school system as a school principal from 1946-1948. In 1948 he joined the Winston-Salem, NC school system as principal at the White Rock School and at Old Town School until 1963. He then served as Assistant Superintendent of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools. He was instrumental in implementing kindergarten classes in the public schools. He retired from the school system in 1977. He was known by both teachers and students for being gentle and a gentleman. He was sensitive to the needs of others and the voice of reason.
He was a life-long member of the Methodist Church and a member of New Hope United Methodist Church for over 65 years. He was a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Winston-Salem Golden "K" Kiwanis Club and a member of the NC Retired School Personnel Association and active at the local, district, and state level.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 17 at New Hope United Methodist Church. Visitation will be at 11:00 AM with the service at 12:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community.
