Mr. Jerry  Clifton Browning 
    BURLINGTON — Mr. Jerry  Clifton Browning , 67, of 1008 Sherwood Dr., went to be with the Lord at 10 a.m Saturday, August 20, 2005, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
    A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Delores Cox Browning  and son of the late John Edison Browning  and Ethel Styers Browning .
    Mr. Browning  graduated from Williams High School in 1956 and attended Elon College. He graduated from Alamance Community College with a degree in Criminal Justice in 1981 and was chosen most outstanding member of the class. He later taught Constitutional Law at Alamance Community College. Mr. Browning  was employed in February 1972 with the Burlington Police Department and was promoted through the ranks to Lieutenant before retiring in 1992.
    Career highlights include: He was an original member of the department’s first Tactical Team "E-Platoon," a special operations unit that performed high risk arrests and other tactical law enforcement operations. He was an office holder with the N.C. Juvenile Officers Association and a member of the International Juvenile Officers Association. He was N.C. Crime Prevention Officer of the Year in 1988 and 1992. He was recognized for Outstanding Achievement in 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1991. He initiated the Victim’s Assistance Program in 1990. Departments he served in include Patrol, Detective, Youth, Crime Prevention, and the DARE Program. Including auxiliary service prior to full time employment and time with the Burlington Housing Authority after retirement, he served the citizens of Burlington for 30 years.
    Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Delores Cox Browning , of the home; two sons, Mr. Stephen Lynn Browning  and Sherry of Charlotte and Mr. Kenneth Mark Browning  and wife Andrea of Burlington; and a sister, Mrs. Linda Browning  Steele of Basehor, Kan.
    Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, August 22, at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Burlington with Rev. Wade Cox, Rev. Howard Thompson and Rev. Laura Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Alamance Memorial Park.
    The family will receive friends at the Rich & Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 3to 5 this afternoon and other times at the residence of Mark & Andrea Browning , 225 S. Gurney St., Burlington, NC 27215.
    Memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Rd., Burlington, NC 27215.
