Marie Sutton Gerringer
ELON - Marie Sutton Gerringer, 97, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at her home surrounded by her family.
She was a native of Alamance County and the daughter of the late Onnie Barrett and Marie Ida Payne Sutton. She was the wife of the late Freeman Gerringer.
Marie retired from P. Lorillard Tobacco after 25 years of service.
She was member of Bethlehem Christian Church where she served as Sunday school teacher for the Ever Ready Sunday school class, church historian and youth director in the past.
She was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and was always active in her community and church. Marie was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She is survived her son, Jerry Dee Gerringer and wife, Zane of Elon and a daughter, Patricia Ann “Pat” Lewis of Gibsonville; grandchildren, Brad (Tracy) Benfield and Drew (Shea) Freeman Gerringer; great-grandchildren, Rhett Freeman Gerringer, London Marie Benfield, Sierra Elizabeth Coll and Jace Harrison Gerringer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents; brothers, Lenneous Lee Sutton, Rev. Thomas Sutton, O.B. Sutton, Jr., Garland Sutton and Gilmer Sutton; sisters, Alene Warren, Mary Lou Long, Opal Jones, Lillie Brown and Doris Wilhoite.
The family would like to thank her caregivers Marie Riggs and the nurses and staff of Hospice of Alamance-Caswell.
A service to celebrate her life will be held on Friday, August 11, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem Christian Church by Rev. Mike Mitchener and Rev. Todd Felkel.
The burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6- 8 p.m. on Thursday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at the home.
