Sara Palmer Rogers Compton
   GRAHAM — Mrs. Sara Palmer Rogers Compton, age 98, formerly of 1232 Rogers Road, Graham, N.C., died Sunday, April 17, 2011 at The Homeplace of Burlington. .

   Mrs. Compton was the wife of William Branson Compton who died in 1994, and the daughter of Benjamin McLeskey and Dora Carraway Rogers, both deceased. Sara Palmer was born March 14, 1913 in Liberty, N.C. and soon thereafter moved with her family to Alamance County where her forebears have been prominent farmers for many generations.

   In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Compton was predeceased by a sister, Nan McCoy Rogers Neal (Theodoric) of Albany, Ga.; a brother, Dr. George Carraway Rogers (Louise) of Spartanburg, S.C.; and a little brother, Joseph Benjamin Rogers, who died in his youth.

   Mrs. Compton was educated in the Graham Public Schools and graduated Valedictorian in the class of 1930. She attended Woman’s College, now UNC-G. Her public employment covered 37 years with Kayser-Roth Corporation and its predecessors in the hosiery industry. She retired in 1978 as supervisor of payrolls and payroll taxes.

   Sara Palmer grew up as a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church where her grandparents, George S. and Annie Palmer Rogers, were charter members. The family moved their membership to Graham Presbyterian Church when she started school. As a member of Graham Presbyterian for more than 70 years, Sara Palmer was a former member of the Chancel Choir, vicepresident of the Women of the Church, Sunday School teacher, leader of the young people and Circle leader many times. She was presented with an Honorary Life Membership in North Carolina Presbyterian Women.

   She was always very interested in civic affairs and was a former member of the Graham Garden Club, the Leornian Book Club and an avid bridge player since high school days.

   Survivors are daughter, Sara Branson Compton (Sally ) Horner and husband Robert (Bobby); son, William Rogers Compton Sr., of the home; and a dear cousin, Mrs. Annie McIntyre Brown of Beaufort, N.C. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Mark Rogers Horner (Kelley), William Rogers Compton Jr. (Kelly), Douglas Compton Horner ( Christy), Kelly Ann Compton Cook ( Jason), all of Graham, and Cara Elizabeth Compton Rusmisell of Charlotte.

   There are 10 surviving great-grandchildren, Logan, Lilly Kate and Jake Compton, Lauren and Lindsey Cook, Samantha Horner, Taylor and Isaac Horner, Quinn and Gabriel Rusmisell; and greatstepgrandchildren, Steven St. Germain and Olivia and Ryan Henry. Cousins surviving are Mr. and Mrs. George O. and Dixie Rogers of Graham, and Mrs. C.P. Wayne and Mrs. Rebecca Wilson of Whiteville, N.C. Special nieces and nephews also survive.

   Funeral services will be conducted at Graham Presbyterian Church on Thursday, April 21, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. Amanda Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery immediately following the service.

   The family will receive friends and relations in the Parlor of the church one hour prior to the service.

   Memorials may be made to Graham Presbyterian Church, Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell or to a charity of choice.

   The family wishes to thank the staff of The Homeplace of Burlington and Hospice of Alamance-Caswell for the care and kindness shown.
