    BURLINGTON — James Owen Pickett, 93, formerly of 1543 Shadylawn Drive, died Sunday, Oct. 23, 2011, at the Hospice Home in Burlington. For the past 13 years, Mr. Pickett made his home on Orange Drive in Elon, with his close friend, Clareese Ward.
    Born in Rocky Mount, Va., and raised in Lexington, Mr. Pickett was the husband of the late Mary Louise Beckom Pickett and the son of the late Cleat Pickett and the late Lola Pendleton Pickett.
    Mr. Pickett was retired from the U.S. Postal Service, where he was a both a rural and city mail carrier. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Burlington.
    Mr. Pickett is survived by two sons, Jack Pickett and his wife, Charma, of Charleston, S.C., and Jim Pickett and his wife, Becky, of Greer, S.C.; four grandchildren, Bryan Pickett and his wife, Robin, Candice Vasquez, Jessica Pickett and Olivia Pickett; and two greatgrandchildren, Davis Pickett and Owen Pickett.
    In addition to his parents, Mr. Pickett was preceded in death by a grandson-in-law, Tello Vasquez.
    The family will receive friends Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Westminster Presbyterian Church from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Other times they will be at the residence, 1543 Shadylawn Drive, Burlington.
    A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday following the visitation at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Powell Sykes. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
    Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215, or to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1126 W. Webb Ave., Burlington, NC 27215.
