George Thomas “Tommy” Hughes
BURLINGTON — George Thomas “Tommy” Hughes, 96, formerly of 4115 Union Ridge Road, died at 1:45 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003 at Twin Lakes Center after several years of declining health.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Marjorie Kernodle Hughes for 71 years, and the son of the late John Edd Hughes and Susie Eudora Smith Hughes.
He was a retired construction worker and carpenter and was a life member of Union Ridge United Church of Christ.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Jake (Shirley) Brooks of Burlington; two grandchildren, Kami B. Hardy and Kim H. Brooks; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Florance H. Smith of Elon and Mrs. Lillie Mae H. Teer of Mebane.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Fannie Belle Coleman; and three brothers, Edgar Lee Hughes, Charlie Hughes, and John Will Hughes.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Union Ridge United Church of Christ by the Rev. Phil Hardy, and the Rev. John Settlemyer.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall of Union Ridge United Church of Christ from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, and at other times at the residence of the granddaughter, Kami B. Hardy, 4115 Union Ridge Road, Burlington.
