Charles Donald “Don” Kernodle Sr.


    BURLINGTON — Mr. Charles Donald “Don” Kernodle Sr., 86, of 4144 Union Ridge Road, Burlington went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 4, 2009.
    A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Kathleen Poole Kernodle and the son of Walter Graham Kernodle and Wyona Somers Kernodle, both deceased. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving overseas for four years during World War II. He retired from P. Lorillard Tobacco Company in Greensboro and was a member of Union Ridge Church.
    Survivors include two sons, Charles Donald “Don” Kernodle Jr. and Walter Graham “Wally” Kernodle, both of Burlington; a daughter, Wyona Jean K. Gaither and husband W. T. of Burlington; two grandchildren, Charles Brian Gaither of Haw River and Michelle G. Stewart and husband Tony of High Point; and one brother, Alan D. Kernodle of Big Springs, Texas.
    He was preceded in death by seven brothers, Graham S., Staley B., Raymond, Claude, Loftin, Richard and Eldridge Kernodle and two sisters, Marjorie Kernodle Hughes and Eugenia Kernodle Patillo.
    The funeral service will be conducted at Union Ridge Church on Thursday, October 8 at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Dan Ficklin and the Rev. James L. Rosser. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
    The family will receive friends at the Rich & Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington on Wednesday from 7 until 9 p.m. At other times they will be at the residence of his daughter, Jean Gaither, 139 Coveside Trail, Burlington, N.C.
    Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, N.C. 27215.
