ELON — Charles Freeman Somers Sr., 84, of 6854 Kerr’s Chapel Church Road, died at his home on Wednesday, August 14, 2002.
He was a native of Caswell County and lived in the Cherry Grove Community all his life. He was the son of the late John Roberts Somers and Mamie Walker Somers. His wife was the late Elma Butler Somers, who died in 1997.
Freeman graduated from Anderson High School in 1937. He retired from Cone Mills and was a farmer in the community. He was a member of Gilliam’s Primitive Baptist Church since 1938 and served as a deacon since 1945 and he also served as the church clerk. Survivors, Sons and daughters-in law, Charles F. Somers Jr. and his wife, Vickye, of Elon, and Donald L. Somers and his wife, Wanda, of Graham; Daughter, Ms. Gloria Briggs of Elon and daughter and son-in-law, Carol Wade and her husband, Dennis, of Burlington. 7 Grandchildren, 5 Great-grandchildren; and 1 Great-Great-Grandchild.
Preceded in death by; Sisters, Susan Elizabeth Page, Geneva Somers and Emma Somers. Brothers, Peter Raymond Somers, John Herman Somers and James Burch Somers.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, August 17, 2002, at Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church and burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM on Friday evening at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory. Other times the family will be at the home. Memorials may be made to Gilliam’s Primitive Baptist Church, 3905 N.C. 87 North, Elon, N.C. 27244.
