Billy Ray “Bill” Thomas
Billy Ray “Bill” Thomas of Burlington left his earthly body and joined his adored wife, Evon, and their Lord, on December 16th, 2020.
He loved his home and he passed away there, in his bed, where he wished to be with his beloved niece and caregiver, Shanna Nicole Phillips.
He died after a tragic fall in the hospital after having beaten COVID 19. He was 83 years old.
Bill was born on January 14, 1937 in the Hopedale area of Burlington to Elvie E. Thomas and Louise Starnes Thomas, both deceased. He was one of seven children.
Bill married his sweetheart, his “Baby”, Delois Evon Walker Thomas, in 1958. Their love lasted for 54 years as a married couple until her death in 2013, a loss from which he was never really quite the same.
Bill was a character, a joker, he loved to sing and he loved an audience. He worried about his family and always wanted to make sure they were safe. He loved to watch baseball games, NASCAR, old western movies and listen to country music. And he never missed The Price Is Right or the Kelly Clarkson Show.
He was known around town as The Bread Man, having worked for Merita Bread/Interstate Brands for more than 34 years. He loved the customers on his route and was known to pass out honey buns to the local kids.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Delois Evon Walker Thomas, and by his older brother, Elvie E. Thomas, Jr.
He is survived by his only child, Dawn Thomas-Mixon (Mick), of Burlington/ Charlotte, grandson Jonathan Lane Waddell (Natalie), of Burlington, great-grandsons Landon, Xander and Kaison, sister Betty Thomas Simmons, Florida, sister Ann Thomas Abner, Burlington, sister Judy Thomas Phillips, Haw River, brother Gene Thomas (Pat), Graham, brother Harry Thomas, Pleasant Gardens, as well as many nieces and nephews, and dear friends Ruth Brooks, Graham, and Kendall Davis and family, Burlington.
The family would like to thank his team of caregivers for taking very good care of him for the past two years.
In lieu of flowers, his daughter asks that you bless someone this Christmas with a call, a card and a kind word.
There will be a small, private graveside service for his family and close friends at Graham Memorial Park on Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at 2:15 p.m. with a larger Celebration of Life event planned for this spring.
Rich & Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington is assisting the family.
