Mr. Horace Logan Whitten
ELON COLLEGE — Mr. Horace Logan Whitten, 89, of 2058 Ridgedell Drive, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at White Oak Manor after several years of failing health.
Born in Hope, Ark., he was the husband of the late Mrs. Marie Clark Whitten, and the son of Mr. Dolphus Whitten Sr. and Mrs. Anne Whitten, both deceased. He was retired after 31 years of service as manager of Wauban Laboratories in Schriever, La., a division of Carolina Biological Supply. He was a member of Front Street United Methodist Church and a member of Workers Sunday School Class.
A graduate of Gurdon High School in Arkansas, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Ouachita Baptist College and a master’s degree from the University of Texas in Austin in the field of biology. He served several years as a science teacher and principal at Lono and Blevins, Ark., and Gladewater, Texas. He also worked as a seafood inspector in the New Orleans area prior to joining Carolina Biological Supply. He was active in the United Methodist Church and in numerous scientific, educational and cultural organizations.
He is survived by a son, Mr. Richard Horace Whitten of Costa Rica; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Thomas William Whitten, and a brother, Mr. Dolphus Whitten Jr.
A graveside service will be conducted at noon today at Alamance Memorial Park by the Rev. Dr. William C. Simpson, pastor of Front Street United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Dr. G. Robert McKenzie, pastor emeritus.
The family will be at the home of Mrs. Thomas (Corrina) Whitten, 2058 Ridgedell Drive.
