Mrs. Evelyn Hayes Routh
BURLINGTON — Mrs. Evelyn Hayes Routh, 73, of 2049 Routh Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at her home after a sudden illness.
A native of Elkin, she was the wife of Mr. Boyd A. Routh, who survives, and the
daughter of Mr. Preston Thomas Hayes and Mrs. America R. Mittie Lassiter Hayes, both
deceased. She was a homemaker. She was a charter member of New Hope Baptist
Church, a member of the Welcome Bible Class, and sang for more than 35 years with the
New Hope Trio. She received Mother of the Year in 1981. She served in the Music
Department and in the choir for more than 46 years and currently served on the planning
committee. She formerly served on the program committee.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include two daughters, Ms. Sherry Routh
Jones of Burlington and Mrs. Stacy W. (Patty) Harrington of Mebane; one son, Mr. Joey
Allan Routh of Elon College; a sister, Mrs. Beulah Josey of Troutman; and five
grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by five sisters, Ms. Ethel Crawford, Ms. Lavassie Gillispie,
Ms. Collie Hayes, Ms. Margie Josey and Ms. Mary Elizabeth Hayes; three brothers, Mr.
William Hayes, Mr. Walter Hayes and Mr. Noah Hayes; and one grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church by the Rev.
Randy Hobbs, pastor, and the Rev. Frank Gribble, former pastor of the church. The body
will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Magnolia
Cemetery in Elon College.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at
the home.
