Samuel "Sam" Freeman Lewis Sr.


    BURLINGTON — Samuel "Sam" Freeman Lewis Sr., age 90, of 3903 Muhlenberg Court, at Twin Lakes, passed away Sunday, November 9, 2008. A native of Guilford County, he was the husband of 66 years to the late Anderrena Brown Lewis and the son of the late Ed Poe and Mary Apple Lewis.
    Sam served 39 months in World War II in the Army Air Force, part of which was in the Philippine Islands. Before retirement he operated Lewis Oil Service and belonged to the N.C. Oil Jobbers Association.
    Sam was an active member of Shiloh United Methodist Church and the Methodist Men, serving several years as chairman of the board of trustees and in various other offices in the church. Sam and Howard Troxler organized the first Boy Scout Troop at the church and he served as Assistant Scout Leader.
    Survivors include his daughter, Carol Griffin and husband, Robert C., of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; son, Samuel F. Lewis Jr. of Raleigh; grandchildren, Allyson Binnicker and husband, Robbie, of Piedmont, S.C., Brent Griffin and wife, Ginger, of Phoenix. Ariz., Hollie Vires and husband, Rob, of Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, and Cameron Griffin of Charleston, S.C.; great-grandchildren, Griffin, Sam and Braden Binnicker of Piedmont, S.C.; sister-in-law, Edith Lewis.
    He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; brothers, Everett Lewis and his wife, Louise, and Ervin Lewis.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 12, 2008, at the Shiloh United Methodist Church by the Rev. David Stark. Interment will follow in Alamance Memorial Park with military honors provided by the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Lewis will remain at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory until taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the funeral service.
    The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and at other times at the residence.
