Carl graduated Burlington High School, Burlington, N.C. in 1940, where he played trumpet and French horn in the band and was a member of the National Honor Society. He was awarded an academic scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he worked in the library and was selected by the library committee to serve as esteemed Head of the Federal Documents

Upon discharge, he returned to UNC and completed his education, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Commerce in 1947. After graduation, he attended dental school at the University of Pennsylvania.
