Col James “Jim” Howard McIntyre, US Air Force, Ret., 81, of Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away on Monday, March 17, 2025, at Rex Hospital due to complications from Alzheimer’s and Type 1 Diabetes.

Born in Burlington, North Carolina, to the late Joseph and Annie McIntyre, Jim lived a life full of service, passion, and love for his family.

He was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force, serving for 27 years. During his time in the Air Force, Jim traveled the world, earning the rank of Colonel. He had many assignments during his distinguished career; two of his most treasured were his role on the test team for the iconic A-10 Warthog and his role as Deputy Commander of Maintenance at Hahn Air Base in Germany.

Jim also completed his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina and earned his master's degree while serving in the military, further continuing his education at Air War College.

After retiring from the Air Force, Jim utilized his vast knowledge and experience in the aviation industry. He briefly consulted with ARINC in Oklahoma City before taking on the role of Director of Maintenance at Southwest Airlines, where he served for four years.

However, after his aviation career, Jim followed a new passion for cooking and attended culinary school. This led to the owning & operating of The Greenleaf Inn in Camden, South Carolina, where he and his wife, Julie, shared their love of food with their community.

When he wasn’t working or cooking, Jim was a loyal supporter of all things Carolina, an avid golfer, and above all, a proud grandfather. Whether near or far, he could always be counted on to follow his grandsons’ sports endeavors, offering his unwavering encouragement and love.

Col. McIntyre is survived by his children, James H. “Jimmy” McIntyre, Jr. & wife Mary Beth of Durham and Molly McDaniel & husband Jason of Raleigh; grandchildren, Evan McIntyre of High Point, Graham McIntyre of Durham, Connor McDaniel of Charlotte, and Dillon & Owen McDaniel of Raleigh; many special nieces and nephews, and extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Julie Fegley McIntyre; siblings, Joan McIntyre Jordan and Ronnie McIntyre.

Colonel Mac will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be determined.
