Robert Lee Mahaley


    PROVIDENCE — Robert Lee Mahaley, 84, formerly of 96 Easy St., died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008, at Piney Forest Health Care Center in Danville, Va. Born May 18, 1924, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late James Leroy Mahaley and Susan Walton Mahaley. He was married to Nellie Rice Mahaley who predeceased him.
    Mr. Mahaley lived most of his life in the Providence community of North Carolina and had been in declining health for the past two months. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Pacific where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart. He had worked as a maintenance supervisor with Dan River Mills and later owned and operated Mahaley’s Carpet Installation. After retirement, he handmade over 83,000 wooden crosses which he gave away as far as Africa, South America, Caribbean, Philippines, Southeast Asia and all of the United States for missionaries and other people. He was a member of Shady Oak Baptist Church, a past member of American Legion Memorial Post 325, and a past member of VFW Post 647.
    He is survived by three sons, George Lee Mahaley and wife, Julia, of Pelham, James Robert Mahaley and wife, Brenda, of Providence, and Wayne Thomas Mahaley and wife, Wanda, of Yanceyville; a brother, Brice Mahaley of Yanceyville; and two sisters, Daisy Fain of Arlington, Va., and Annie Boswell of Providence. He is also survived by three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by three brothers, Irvin, Andrew and Junior Mahaley; and a sister, Rosa Byrd.
    Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home chapel in Danville with the Rev. Avery Marshall and the Rev. Kenneth Hammock officiating. Interment will follow in Shady Oak Baptist Church Cemetery on Walters Mill Road with military honors by American Legion Dan River Post #1097 Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the residence, 96 Easy St., Providence.
