Mr. William Roach Simmons Jr.

BURLINGTON - Mr. William Roach Simmons Jr., 89, of 3727 Wade Coble Drive, Apt. 210, Burlington, and formerly of Caswell County, died at Twin Lakes Retirement Center on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013 at 1:10 p.m.

A native of Caswell County, he married his high school sweetheart, Mamie Sue King Simmons, on June 10, 1944.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and a retired textile employee until the age of 80.

William was a life member of Concord Christian Church where he served as a treasurer and deacon for many years.

Within the last several years, he was made an honorary deacon.

He was a charter member of the Southern Caswell Ruritan Club and in December of 2011, he received his 50-year Perfect Attendance Pin. William always enjoyed working his garden and having a beautiful yard.

In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Simmons Brewer and husband Bobby of Yanceyville and Kathy Simmons McPherson and husband Tom of Pinehurst; four grandchildren, Brian W. Brewer of Madison, W. Bartlett Brewer and wife Maggie of Yanceyville, T. Richmond McPherson III and wife Janet of Charlotte and Katherine Miles Jones and husband Chad of New York City, N.Y.; three great-grandchildren, Eliza and Colton Brewer and Thomas McPherson IV; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Roach Simmons Sr. and Minnie Miles Simmons; two sisters, Dorothy Simmons Wilkins and Jane Simmons Tate; and a brother, R. Elmond Simmons.

The funeral service will be conducted at Concord Christian Church on Sunday, March 3, 2013 at 3 p.m. by the Rev. Chuck Hartman and the Rev. Keith Murray. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.
The family will receive friends at the Rich & Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington on Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. At other times, they will be at the residence.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff at Twin Lakes for their care and support.
