Herbert A. "Herb" Brooks

    BURLINGTON — Herbert A. "Herb" Brooks, 78, of 1160 Stoney Creek Church Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at Alamance Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. He was a native of Alamance County and the son of the late James Lee and Beulah Christopher Brooks. He was the husband of Sue Simmons Brooks, having celebrated over 55 years of marriage.

    Herbert was a retired engineer with AT &T after 25 years of service and he was previously employed with Glen Raven Knitting. He was a member of the 1942 graduating class of Altamahaw-Ossipee High School and received his bachelor’s degree in Math and Physics from Elon College in 1960. He was a longtime member of Stony Creek Presbyterian Church where he served in the past as a deacon, elder and Sunday school teacher for the adult class. Herbert was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, A-O Civitan Club, Stony Creakers, Burlington Moose Lodge #649 and the Alamance Senior Men Golf Association. He was an auxiliary volunteer for Alamance Regional Medical Center for many years and also the American Red Cross, aiding with the blood drives.

    Survivors include his wife of the home, daughter and son-inlaw, Mrs. James (Carol) Caffarel of Greensboro and son and daughter-in-law, Ray S. and Karen Brooks of Matthews; grandchildren, Brian Caffarel, Katy Caffarel, Tyler and Carson Brooks; brother and sister-in-law, William Lee (Betty) Brooks of Graham.

    He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Inez Green and brother, Cleave Brooks. The ASMGA is being asked to serve as honorary pallbearers and sit as a group at the funeral service.

    The funeral services will be held on Friday, September 19, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the Stony Creek Presbyterian Church by Dr. Max Deal, pastor, and Dr. Wally Snyder. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 this evening at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory, and at other times at the home.
